Hi Richard,

I always tried to eat cereals high in fiber, thinking it was healthy. But here's the thing: most of them have sugar!

The Vytorin story is amazing. Yes it lowers cholesterol, but it speeds up atherosclerosis, which is what actually kills you! I can't help but think Mr. Taubes must feel a little vindicated.

Before this story came out, I didn't realize that Big Pharm doesn't have to do an event study until after FDA approval and after it's out on the market. The pharm for Vytorin waited a year and a half before telling anyone they might be making their heart disease worse instead of better. That's VERY scary.

I also have become obsessed by Gary Taubes' book. I have a real problem with the doctors who have become invested in the low fat low cholesterol low heart disease without ever looking at the data or ignoring any data which was counter to what they believed. I sold drugs for 33 years and saw the studies dealing with high vs low cholesterol and mortality and morbidity data. I also knew that losing weight would lower LDL and raise HDL but..... when we look at the numbers (deaths) we find that lower isn't always better for everything. This latest study with Vytorin vs simvistatin showing that lower cholesterol numbers didn't make any difference in mortality. What in the world is going on? Gary makes sense from the standpoint that we don't have enough data for the low carb diets but we do have data showing that low fat diets don't help fight heart disease and may cause other problems. I love the book and will re read it and have suggested it to many other people. I can't wait to see what else comes out of this in the way of studies dealing with weight loss and disease. This has made doctors look like real fools. My wife says that eating raisin bran in a major bowl of cereal every day wasn't a smart thing to do. I guess I have been caught by following the conventional wisdom instead of doing any research by myself.

Hi Jimmy! I've been all over your site today. It's incredibly informative about low carbing it. Thanks for the encouragement. I've started and I'm taking a no stress approach to it. Low fat just doesn't work, and I can't imagine doing low fat AND low carb. What's the point in eating?

It WILL work if you just give it a chance. I lost 180 pounds in 2004 eating this way and have kept it off ever since. But, more importantly, my health is the BEST it has EVER been eating a diet consisting of 60 percent fat and about 5-10 percent carbohydrate. :)
