Self Help Addicts

The Answer to the Question “What’s wrong with me?”

Are You a Self Help Addict? August 15, 2007

Are you a Self Help Addict (SHA)?
• Are you always reading at least one self help book (SHB)?
• Have you read dozens if not hundreds of self help books?
• Do you read more than one SHB at a time?
• When you read a SHB do you proclaim “this book has changed my life!” only to buy another SHB the next time you pass a bookstore?
• Are you always trying some exercise to clear your chakras, to affirm your goodness, prove you’re loveable, find the perfect mate, discover the perfect position, combine the right amount of carbs and fats?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these question, you are a Self Help Addict (SHA). I should know… Hi, my name is Julia and I am a Self Help Addict (SHA).

I have read over 100 SHBs. The uninitiated may be shocked to learn that this is not a very high number in the SHA Tribe. I barely reach royalty status in the reading of SHBs. One of my best friends, a fellow SHA, has read twice as many as I have. And get this: we often haven’t even heard of the other’s books and authors!

We SHAs are relentless in pursuit of ‘The Answer’. What’s the question? “What’s wrong with me?”

With the best of the books at some point they exclaim, “oh my God! This is amazing! That’s what’s going on with me! This is The Answer! It’s been right in front of my eyes all along! I can do this!” We do this only to find ourselves years, months, weeks, days – o.k. honestly most of the time – mere hours later thinking the same negative thoughts, eating the same crap, falling for the same kind of (generally unavailable) guy and/or gal.

So why do we keep buying them, reading them? Why, oh why do we have so many?

  1. Oh, why , oh why, is the question. Billions of dollars are spent over the past several years. We are all trying to get better!

My late husband, Julius, when he was mad at me used to throw this barb at me.

“You read all these self-improvement books, and you HAVE NOT IMPROVED!”

Listen, Julius, wherever you are, I am still trying!

One of our biggest obstances is that we are resistant to any kind of change.

We are inclined to stay with the devil we know.

I wrote a post on this on my site which you might want to consider with all the great advice on this one!

Please let me know your thoughts, opinions and objections to what I have said here!

    Hi Corrine,

I’ll check our your site. Here’s another thing about change: it happens fast. Sometimes, most of the time, it’s just little changes, some you can’t even see. Others can’t see them either, but they’re there and they start to accumulate.

But sometimes they’re big: One day you like your friends, one day you don’t, seriously. Or one day you crave something and the next day you just have no need for it.
